SUMMARY:Lecture-Recital: "Stylistic Characteristics of Francisco Mignone's Valsas Brasileiras"
DESCRIPTION:Francisco Mignone (1897-1986) was one of Brazil’s most versatile artists. He was a composer of the first rank\, as well as a teacher\, accompanist\, piano virtuoso\, chamber musician\, conductor\, and an accomplished wind instrumentalist. Mignone was a prolific composer who wrote in all major genres and for a wide variety of instruments. The piano works constitute a large part of his entire output and range from large-scale works\, such as the four piano sonatas and nine sonatinas\, to smaller pieces\, such as the etudes\, preludes and waltzes.\n\nThe compositions of Mignone\, like much of the Brazilian art music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, show the influence of the three cultures that form the country’s complex heritage. European music\, Amerindian music\, and African music collided\, mixed\, and gave rise –over the course of centuries–to a uniquely Brazilian idiom. Mignone’s life as a composer contains well-defined periods that demonstrate a microcosm of this cultural history: his earliest works showcase his Italian-French training\, while his mature output gives voice to a new genre of Brazilian art music\, rich in folk tonalities within Romantic structures.\n\n\nThis lecture-recital will focus on the unique stylistic characteristics of Mignone’s 24 Valsas Brasileiras (Brazilian Waltzes). They represent the Brazilian art music idiom\, in that they combine African-Brazilian folk and popular idioms with elements of European art music. Specific musical characteristics resulting from the influence of the ethnic sources just discussed will also be addressed\, followed by a performance of selected waltzes. \n\nAlexandra Mascolo-David has devoted the last three decades to exploring and unearthing the music of Portuguese and Brazilian composers\, especially that of Francisco Mignone. She is in the forefront of presenting Mignone’s piano music\, and her performances\, especially of his “Valsas brasileiras” have been widely acclaimed. Though\nsometimes formless\, even boring\, waiting nevertheless allows us to wander\, daydream\,\nand wonder; it opens a space to be creative\, to be us. This piece is a musical paean to the\nkind of accidental unstructured time that used to randomly fill our days. It is also an\nappeal to re-consider our engagement with them that they might fill them again. Each\nmovement takes the music of another composer and subjects it to rhythmic distortions\nand canonic processes that transform fragments\, or even whole pieces\, into new works. SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE of David Maslanka's Concerto No. 3 for piano and Wind Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:My collaboration with David Maslanka dates back several years\, when I performed and recorded (for Albany records) his Piano Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Wind Ensemble with the Illinois State Wind Symphony\, directed by Stephen K. Steele. The concerto’s difficulty and wild virtuosity intimidated me at first\, but I decide to take on the challenge! The road to the live performance and recording sessions was tortuous\, but in the end\, we succeeded\, resulting in a rewarding and valuable experience. (For additional information on Concerto No. 1\, please click on: David Maslanka Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2) \nMotivated by that first experience\, I subsequently approached David Maslanka about the possibility of writing a new concerto for piano and wind symphony\, but in a “calmer” style than that first one. According to the composer\, the new concerto “… moves between a very interior quality and explosiveness\, finally settling in a very quiet internal space. It seems like several movements packed together into one […] This piece was not easy to write. There are new things here for me. I feel like a transition is happening to yet another quality of expression. My music\, yes\, but new.” \nThe Concerto No. 3 was commissioned as a consortium. The world premiere will take place here at Central Michigan University\, with CMU’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble\, under the direction of John. E. Williamson. \n  \n
